Getting involved...

Before you go thinking yee haa I'm going to go and buy a horse. There must be considerations first. Such as horses are time, space and money consumers:| don't get one unless you can seriously devote lots of these resources.

Do lessons first...

Please consider getting paid professional lessons before deciding whether or not horses are right for you. Many inexperienced people go and buy a horse not knowing what they get themselves into and can cause many dangerous situations. There are many places that will happily teach you to handle horses for a small fee. Look for one local near you.

Basics of Horse Handling

Horses are large animals that have the ability to cause injury to their handlers. Most injuries result from inexperienced handlers getting themselves in too deep thinking they know more then they actually do. Horses must be treated with respect in this regard and always have safety first for you and the horses. Horses are flight animals and almost will always run rather then fight a danger. When we ride a horse we hijack this nature of the horse to manipulate it into doing what we desire. A horse will respond to firm, patient handling with repetition and reward the key to success.

Tools and Materials

General horse handling will require...
a. Halter
b. Lead rope
This depends on what you are doing though. If you are riding you will need other equipment such as saddle, bridle, saddle pad and always remember a helmet:)
